Fact Check: Video Does NOT Show Lithuanian Farmers Protesting Against Closure Of Border Crossings With Belarus Fact Check: Video Does NOT Show Lithuanian Farmers Protesting Against Closure Of Border Crossings With Belarus Agrarian Issue

Does a video show Lithuanian farmers with tractors on the road to protest against the closure of two border crossings with Belarus? No, that's not true: The footage shows Lithuanian farmers demonstrating against the country's agricultural policy in Vilnius in January 2024.

The claim appeared on February 23, 2024, in a video (archived here) by the TikTok account @sotniktiktok (archived here). The caption on the screen read (translated from Russian to English by Lead Stories staff):

Lithuanians are on their way to protests against the closure of the border crossing with Belarus

Lithuanian farmers and citizens oppose the government's decision to close 2 more border crossings with Belarus.

They know how much the supply of potash fertilizer and other essential goods from Belarus will decline. There is no equivalent anywhere in the world.

A Google reverse image search on February 28, 2024, revealed that the video shows Lithuanian farmers protesting against the country's agricultural policy in Vilnius from January 23 to 25, 2024. Among other things, they criticized the procedure for restoring perennial meadows, the increase in excise duty on fuel and liquefied petroleum gases and the development of protected areas to the detriment of farmers. The protesters addressed six main demands to the government (archived here), including ending the transit of Russian grain through Lithuania, solving the problem of grazing land and solving problems related to the purchase of milk.

On February 21, 2024, the Lithuanian government decided to close two border crossings with the Republic of Belarus (archived here): Raigardas and Lavoriskes. The date for closure was set for March 1, 2024. Vilnius also decided to suspend the movement of pedestrians and cyclists at the last remaining checkpoints. This brings the total number of closed border crossings into the Baltic country to four. The decision was prompted by the dangers (archived here) posed by the intensification of the activities of the Belarusian special and security services against Lithuania and its citizens. However, this has nothing to do with the strike by Lithuanian farmers in Vilnius (archived here).
